Strategy Consulting into Banking?   »   Display all

Dear Forum,

I have been working in Strategy Consulting for the last 3.5 years (two promotions under my belt) - working 60% on strategy and 40% on commercial due diligence projects - mostly for PE firms.

I am interested in moving into Banking but am not sure what my options might be. Are there any IBD bulge roles that might be suitable?

Many thanks for any replies!

TKM

Is there any chance that you could get on a project in a Bank? Knowing some people in the targeted industry and showed them that you can do good work might be a good first step towards a job in Banking.

I think that depends very much on the individual bank, hence I would advice you to call the HR people in a bank to get some first hand information.

It depends on what consulting firm you work for - if it's one of the better names then of course it'd probably be a lot easier to transfer over. Banking is the same as consulting where the name holds a lot of weight.
Since you understand the key principles in banking like due diligence and strategy I'd say you have a good shot. Maybe at a boutique firm - might be easier to get past the bulky recruiters?
But since it is a tough job market it might be tough now to land interviews. The most suitable role would be within advisory such as an industry team, but saying that at your level they may require you to know the industry already (you'd be coming in as an associate). Unless you clearly spell out you'd be willing to settle for an analyst role to learn the ropes. Maybe look for roles that don't require the analyst to know the industry but has the proper valuation skill set...

Hi, I was in the same case as you - strategy consulting is a great entry point into BB associate roles in fact. I've seen quite a few people making hte switch and as the economy recovers your profile will be attractive. Have you considered moving into PE or doing an MBA at this stage? You'll need to highlight your modelling ability though - when I iterviews strategy consultants I would throw in a lot of accouting/modelling questions to be sure they could go up the learning curve

If you have more questions feel free to post on http://www.askivy.net/forum. It is a forum/community created by Investment Bankers and Wharton MBAs, and they are the ones replying and giving professional advice.

By the way - networking works well. Should talk to some of hte Pe guys you worked with - very likely that they worked for a bank or that they have very strong connections with a few people. Also reach out to your firm's alumni, but this is a move that can be done.
